Advanced applications of Waterlase in periodontal regeneration & implant dentistry

Laser has been used widely in dentistry. In periodontics, laser has been considered as one of the adjunct treatments. There are so many protocols that have been proposed. In this presentation, advanced regeneration protocols in periodontics will be discussed.

The periodontal regeneration has been a standard of care in periodontics. The first obstacle is to remove the granulation completely. The blade widths of the instruments may limit the accessibility to the narrow & deep osseous defects. In this instance, Er,Cr:YSGG dental laser has its advantages of non-touching blasting effects and focal spot laser beams, making it easier to debride the periodontal defects.

In implant dentistry, laser can be applied in treating peri-implantitis through decontaminating the implant surface and soft tissue gingivectomy. To date, there is no single method superior to others for decontaminating the infected implant surfaces. Laser is one of the approaches. In the presentation, peri-implant bone regeneration was achieved via laser decontamination and peri-implant GBR.

A novel de-epithelization technique with the aid of Er,Cr:YSGG dental laser was innovated, which facilitate an intraoral way to visualize and control the process. This presentation will introduce this novel technique with the support of the histological evidence as well as the clinical applications. The de-epithelialized autogeneous gingival grafts can be successfully used for treating gingival recession via root coverage procedures, for achieving soft tissue augmentation around implants and obtaining keratinized tissue with better color match. The laser-assisted de-epithelized AGG technique has been proved to be a reliable approach to provide dense connective tissue grafts for various clinical applications.

The objective of the presentation is to describe the applications of Er,Cr:YSGG dental laser in both advanced periodontics and implant dentistry.
